Deadly Russian Strike Decimates Poltava, Ukraine: Urgent Calls for International Aid and Criticism of Ukrainian Government

Devastating Russian Strike Hits the City of Poltava in Ukraine

Located between Kiev and Kharkiv, the Ukrainian city of Poltava was the target of a particularly violent Russian strike on Tuesday, September 2nd. While a military site was the primary objective, it is surrounded by residential areas that were severely affected by the blast’s force.

Amidst the rubble, residents of Poltava film the remnants of their buildings on Tuesday, September 3rd. Facades are torn apart, and the ground is strewn with stone and glass debris. These damages are the result of one of the most severe Russian strikes since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. At least 51 people have died, and over 270 have been injured.

Ukrainian Government Criticized by the Population

Poltava is situated between Kiev and Kharkiv. Russia targeted the Institute of Communications, a military training center surrounded by residential buildings that were severely impacted by the explosions’ force. “My carpets were lifted 20 centimeters due to the explosion. I heard such a noise that it still gives me chills,” shares one resident. Others return to survey the damage, still in shock. Some Ukrainians blame the government for gathering too many military personnel at the site, making it an easy target. President Volodymyr Zelensky calls for an internal investigation and reiterates his plea for international assistance.
